Welcome toHansu Bonsmara Studs

HANSU was founded by Hansie Steyn. A remarkable stud located in the Ventersdorp district. The day Hansie saw the weanlings, he knew this was the breed he wanted to farm with and he registered the stud in 1978. Thanks to 47 years of dedication, the HJS herd has won several awards over the years. After Hansie passed away, his daughter Estelle, with the same perseverance, love and passion, continued to build sustainability on the foundation her father laid, to honour & build his legacy.

My ArtificialInsemination Path

Insemination Path

In 1973, I completed my A.I. (Artificial Insemination) course. Initially, I applied this knowledge exclusively to dairy cows, but my efforts were unsuccessful. Upon reflection, I identified the root cause as early insemination. During that period, I observed estrus in cows and performed insemination accordingly. I exclusively used imported semen from America and Britain, which proved to be expensive, and the low sperm count per straw contributed to the low success rate.

In 1978, following a recommendation from Dr. Hermann Venter, specializing in K.I. (Konjunkturinsemination or Controlled Breeding), I established my Bonsmara herd. Similar to my approach with dairy cows, I observed heat in the morning and evening, performing insemination during standing heat. While conception rates in heifers reached approximately 40%, it was even lower in cows.

Bulls in my herd receive marking halters a day before the K.I. season begins to optimise the breeding process. Insemination occurs at 08:00 in the morning and 5:00 p.m. Cows kept by the bulls are inseminated immediately during the heat. If a cow exhibits minimal paint markings in the morning, she is inseminated, and if more markings appear in the afternoon, she undergoes insemination again. (Note: Dairy cows typically undergo insemination 12 hours after observation.) A.I. is limited to six weeks to prevent an overly prolonged breeding season.

While my approach may not be conventional, the results demonstrate its effectiveness. Over the past three calving seasons, the average conception rate for animals in my herd managed using this system was 81.4%. Despite enduring disappointments from years of experimentation and scepticism from industry experts, the mentioned percentage is calculated based on the number of calved and inseminated cows, highlighting the success of my unconventional methodology.
